Teachers of the Month
By: Cayden Olsrud & Katie Tran

Odin’s Eye would like to present to you this month’s teachers chosen by the students. Thank you for everyone who voted!

6th Grade Teacher of the Month
Mrs. Cieslikowski is a 6th grade teacher who teaches MESA and Science. She is passionate about making sure her students feel empowered and able to improve themselves mentally, academically, and emotionally. She has been teaching for two years at Showalter and has been teaching for 15 years. When asked why she thought she won she said “MESA Day and I try to go the extra mile for my students.” According to her, her year has been  “Very interesting, because this is my first year teaching while being pregnant.” A student who has MESA Club with describe her as “helpful and respectful.” When Mrs. Cieslikowski was asked what it felt like to be “Teacher of the Month for the 6th Grade she said that she was “humbled and honored by this experience.”

7th Grade Teacher of the Month
Ms. Herda is a 7th grade teacher who teaches Social Studies, Social Justice, and Language Arts. Ms. Herda is passionate about Social Justice, giving people a voice, food, cooking, and sharing stories. It’s her 10th year teaching at Showalter Middle School and she described this year as “The Best Year Yet.” When asked why she thought she won she said “I have no idea, because I have pink hair? Social Justice Fridays? I listen to students?” Students describe her funny, energetic, passionate, caring, and “she puts students before herself.” When asked what it felt like to win teacher of the month she replied “It feels like an honor to be recognized.”

8th Grade Teacher of the Month
Ms. Kuwada is a 8th grade teacher who teaches Science.  Ms. Kuwada is passionate about making sure her students get an equal opportunity to learn, eating food, current social justice issues, and being outside. This is her 1st year in Showalter and so far it’s had been a challenge but she’s glad that she had the support from the students and staff here. Ms. Kuwada thought she won this because the students felt comfortable around her and were being productive when told to. Students described her as “flexible and fun to be around”. As Ms.Kuwada was chosen as teacher of the month she responded, “I feel very excited and honored!”

School policy race and equity meeting. 4/21
By: Cayden Olsrud
On Thursday 4/21 around 20 people showed up to talk about race and equity and our new school district policy.  As a witness and participant of the meeting I can say that it was truly amazing the thoughts and ideas that were shared during the meeting. Students at the meeting read through the policy and gave feedback at the end of it. Most people agreed with the policy based upon equity and believed that the policy would bring good change. The new school policy is focused on race and equity and making sure that all of us, no matter what race or other difference have the ability to achieve the education they deserve, while getting what they need.

SMS Poetry Slam. 4/28
By: Cayden Olsrud
The Showalter Poetry Slam happened on Thursday April 28th. Students there read their poems and listened to others present as well. The turnout was very good and quite a bit of people went. Out of the people who auditioned Zeinab Abdu won first place with her poem “Am I the Next Anne Frank?” Andy Tufa “When is the time for now?” and Ifrah Hudle with her poem “It is Taking Over.” There was also an open mic of which anyone could have presented their poems. The poems were very inspirational and it was amazing that people got up and presented their thoughts and creativity to an audience and a panel of judges. Our winners really put a lot of effort on their poems and showed they deserved to be heard.
